Schengen Visa from Dubai in 2026: What's Actually Changed This Year
Rehman Ali · January 28, 2026 · 9 min
Every year around January, I get the same question from agency partners: "Has anything changed for Schengen?" And every year, the answer is yes — but not in the ways most people expect.
The Big Changes for 2026
Updated Financial Thresholds
The unofficial minimum bank balance that consulates look for has shifted. Two years ago, AED 15,000 was generally sufficient for a single applicant on a 10-day trip. This year, I'm seeing rejections at that level from the Italian and Spanish consulates specifically. The sweet spot has moved to AED 22,000-25,000 for the same profile.
Biometric Appointment Availability
VFS Global has expanded their slot availability in Dubai, which is good news. But Abu Dhabi and Sharjah centres are still backed up. If your client is flexible on location, Dubai appointments are typically available 5-7 days sooner.
Pro tip: Wednesday morning slots at the Dubai VFS centre tend to have the shortest wait times. I don't know why. It's been consistent for the last eight months.
Cover Letter Length
The French consulate has started flagging applications with cover letters longer than one page. Not rejecting — flagging for additional review, which adds 3-5 business days to processing. Keep it tight.
What's Working Right Now
Based on our last 2,000 applications processed:
- 97.8% approval rate across all Schengen countries
- Fastest processing: Netherlands (average 4 business days)
- Slowest processing: Italy (average 12 business days)
- Most common rejection reason: Insufficient justification for travel purpose (not finances)
My Advice for This Season
Start preparing summer applications now. If your clients are planning June-August travel, the appointment slots will fill up by mid-March.
Build the documents first. Book the appointment second. That way, when the slot opens, you're ready to submit immediately.
